Processing VJ application

Alt Tag Added during WordPress Conversion

I wanted to have some sort of visuals going on for my next gig (which will be detroit-like techno improvisation
and maybe chillout-dub stuff at this party), searched a bit on the net and found all those
beautiful processing sketches, which I could modify to sync to the MIDI coming out of my sequencer. This blog
posting will be a bit chaotic like all my posts, and sprinkled with code, but the main point is: I can load multiple
PApplets, sync them to the incoming MIDI in a simple way, and control everything out of the Ableton Live applicaiton
I use to play my music. You can basically take most processing sketches off the web, modify them slightly, and
run them in the VJ application. You can get the code at svn co svn://bl0rg.net/processing , or the (debug version) at
here (run with java -jar Polymaniac.jar –standalone). This is a kind of alpha
release, it has not been tested really, but I will
in the next few days, and keep updating blog postings, and it’ll have to work until the 5th august anyway. The posting is
now about how the application’s internals, and a kind of reference for me as I keep forgetting everything.
When you start the application using the –standalone switch, you can use the keyboard keys (qwerty layout) to trigger
midi events. Top row is DRUM notes, middle row is BASS notes, lower row is EVENT notes). A few test applets are loaded, but
peek inside the setup() method of Polymaniac.java to load your own. I’ll add a dynamic ClassLoader in the next few days.
You can switch to fullscreen using “f”.

.

I put my first CDR online at wesen.saugt.net. It’s called felinophoria and features tracks I’ve made over the past six months, though most are from the last 3 weeks. You can also send me an email to order the CDR for 10 EUR + packaging posts (or 15 EUR for CDR + DVDR with all the smaples, sequencer files and reaktor ensembles used), just drop me an email at wesen@saugt.net.

Also sieht mein Uebungsablauf
momentan so aus:

Lebensveraenderungsblogging

Das wird bestimmt wieder ein Eintrag, den ich in ein paar Monaten oder
Jahren bereuen werde, aber auf der anderen Seite ist mir das Thema
doch recht wichtig 🙂 Es geht darum, was so im letzten Jahr passiert
ist (und deswegen auch ein totaler Ego-selbstzentrierter Eintrag,
Technikfans bitte zappen).

Building OpenLaszlo applications using Common Lisp

I have to gotten myself a small university job where I have to build a
web application using OpenLaszlo (http://openlaszlo.org/). OpenLaszlo
is a programming language / development framework to build web
applications based on javascript and XML. Actually it is pretty
similar to all the AJAX stuff we see sprouting everywhere, except that
HTML is replaced by some kind of XML layout language. The application
is compiled to a flash swf file by the OpenLaszlo compiler, and can be
deployed in a static way (copying the swf file to a web server), or
using the OpenLaszlo middleware, which can convert HTTP calls from the
flash file to Java calls, cache resources, proxy stuff, etc… The
approach is pretty neat, the GUI is slick, quite a lot of
documentation and demo applications are available, there are no
portability problems across browsers (once you’ve got flash, but that
runs almost everywhere). Really neat, but who wants to write a
mashed-up mess of XML and Javascript?

USB MIDI Controller

I use Ableton live a lot to jam and to DJ, and using the mouse to
control all the parameters got in the way quite often. You can’t
select a scene and turn a knob at the same time, switching between
views was tiresome. I first thought about building a midibox, but then decided to build my own midi system
using an AVR microcontroller, which I’m more used to. Blueloop helped me a lot
with the schematics, showing me a nice trick to control LEDs using the
same matrix as for the switches (this is not integrated yet,
though).

Schluerf – Mixit40 Breakfast Song

After trying for two or three days to produce a nice dnb track
using the mixit40 samples, I noticed I didn’t really get anywhere. I
had some nice breaks, but somehow I couldn’t manage to produce some
nice nasty bass and rhythmic background. I got more and more
frustrated, and one day before breakfast decided to build a simple
electro track in order to get good karma again. I took most of the
drumkits for Impulse (the Live drum machine) I had built for the dnb
track, and punched in a few simple four on the floor beats. I decided
that was too dumb, and played around with weird time signatures,
getting 3 different beat loops, one 4/4 (basic electro rhythm), one
7/8 jazzy drumloop, and a 6/4 noise rhythm loop.

Acryl – Mixit 40 entry on em411.com

While surfing the web to find electronic music producing related
websites, I stumbled upon em411.com, which is an extremely cool
website for producers. The websites hosts a web forum, as well as user
pages with their releases. Every month, a mixit contest takes
place. Using only a given number of samples, every contestant has to
produce a track, which will be reviewed by the other contestants
afterwards. During the contest, samples for the next competition can
be uploaded. I love challenges, and when I found the webpage last week
I though “wow, I must submit a track for the mixit 40“. I downloaded
the sample package, and loaded them into Ableton Live, which is my
main music program at the moment (actually the only one I own, I
didn’t get around to try much of the free software lying around).
